United back into second with victory over Tigers
![]() EPL: Wayne Rooney, Hull - Manchester United Goals from Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and an Andy Dawson own goal saw Manchester United seal victory over Hull City and return to second position in the table, two point behind leaders Chelsea. Sir Alex Ferguson welcomed back defenders Nemanja Vidic, Wes Brown and Fabio De Silva to the Manchester United starting line-up which allowed Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher to move back into their natural midfield positions. Hull City manager Phil Brown made three changes to the side which lost at Arsenal with Bernard Mendy, Jose Altidore and Seyi Olofinjana coming in. United dominated the early possession and had their first chance in the fifth minute. Antonio Valencia raced away from Andy Dawson down the right wing before crossing to the back post where Ryan Giggs volleyed the ball back across goal but sent it just over the bar. The second chance of the game again fell to Giggs. In the 15th minute Wayne Rooney was fouled by Kamil Zayatte right on edge of the penalty area. From the resulting free kick Giggs curled it around the wall but saw his effort sail inches wide of the post. In the 20th minute Hull had a penalty claim correctly turned down by referee Alan Wiley. Richard Garcia got onto the end of a Craig Fagan through ball but Wes Brown made an excellent tackle inside the area to get the ball. Two minutes later Tomaz Kuszczak was forced into his first save of the match, Nigerian midfielder Olofinjana’s long range effort was easily collected by the Manchester United goalkeeper. In an action packed couple of minutes Boaz Myhill was then called into action to save well from Rooney. Berbatov released the England striker but his left foot drive was easily tipped over by the Hull City keeper In the 31st minute Hull were lucky not to concede when Myhill sliced his clearance from a George Boateng back-pass but Giggs and Rooney couldn’t create a clear opportunity to punish the Hull goalkeeper. With six minutes left in the half Hull had their best chance to open the scoring, Stephen Hunt was released inside the area by Olofinjana but his low shot across sailed wide of Kuszczak’s left hand post. In the 42nd minute Rafael had a fantastic chance to break the deadlock, the young full-back broke forward from the right and continued his run into the penalty area where Berbatov found him. The Brazilian controlled the ball but fired straight at Myhill who pushed the ball away for a corner. In the first minute of injury time United took the lead, Darren Fletcher’s right wing cross was missed by Giggs but not by Rooney who tapped the ball home from five yards to send the champions into half time 1-0 ahead. ![]() Equaliser| Craig Fagan levels for Hull Hull showed an increased work-rate start of second half and their fans acknowledged this and lifted the noise levels inside the KC Stadium as Manchester United sat on their lead. And the home side’s efforts were rewarded in the 57th minute, from a Hull corner Rooney played suicidal pass back to Kuszczak which was intercepted by Fagan, he crossed to the far post for Altidore who was pushed by Rafael and Alan Wiley awarded a penalty. Craig Fagan sent the goalkeeper the wrong way for his first goal of the season and Hull’s deserved equaliser. The equaliser worked as a wake-up call for United who went straight on the attack, and from a 61st minute corner Wes Brown’s looping header was well saved by Myhill. Hull missed the chance to take the lead from a Stephen Hunt corner in the 65th minute. Richard Garcia met the cross at the front post but his header fell just inches wide of the goal. Manchester United took the lead for a second time against the run of play in the 72nd minute, Park Ji Sung and Rooney broke away on the counter attack and from Rooney’s low right wing cross Dawson turned the ball into his own net. With 12 minutes remaining Giggs was replaced by Gabriel Obertan and two minutes later the young Frenchman nearly made an immediate impact. Rooney found him wide on the right but his low cross looped over the bar off a Hull defender. With nine minutes remaining United sealed the three points; Rooney raced away from a Brown header and delivered a pinpoint pass to Berbatov at the back post who tapped home from five yards. United ended the game in control and although Rooney had a chance to extend their lead the champions strolled to the three points. Source: Goal
